Funeral in Minnesota

The 28th and 29th I travelled with a group of 27 GC people to Minnesota for the funeral of one of my students - Deanne Binde. It was a long and exhausting trip, one that will remain in my heart for a very long time. We were gone for 47 hours and 27 of those were spent driving. We left early on Wednesday morning (5:00 AM) and arrived at the church in Lake Park, MN 13.5 hours later.

We met Dee's family and were able to share stories, hugs, and tears with them. The viewing concluded with a service of remembrance where many told stories of the impact that Dee had them. The stories that her friends & family from home shared resonated with those of us from the college as to the zest for life and joy that Dee brought to the world. I know that the stories shared about her college experience moved her family in a way that we probably won't ever truly understand. It was so good to be together in our grief. After the service we headed out to the Binde family farm where we had a candle light vigil - sharing more stories and singing songs that reminded us of Dee.

The funeral was a formal Catholic service. Despite feeling a bit like a fish out of water by not knowing the traditions of the church, I was moved by the hope of eternal life that was expressed in the service. The Goshen College group was asked to sing a hymn as a part of the service. We sang one of Dee's favorites, "Be Thou My Vision". It was a balm to my hurting spirit to join my voice in worship with the others from the college.

Our presence was quite meaningful to Dee's family. And while we knew it meant a great deal, I doubt we fully understand the impact it had.

I am most appreciative of the college for helping us organize the trip.

RIP Deanne Binde

Thanks for sharing about Deanne. I did not know her other than seeing her in "Step on a Crack". Just curious, did she wear a nose ring? There is a hint of something in the photo. -tc

yes, Deanne had a nose ring - usually a small silver hoop.
